In this talk, Dr. Khoja-Moolji discusses her book, Forging the Ideal Educated Girl, which is a genealogy of the ‘educated Muslim girl.’ In the talk,Professor Khoja-Moolji explores how this figure appears and circulates in reformist and state archives between 1857 and 2015. She challenges the prevailing common sense associated with calls for women and girls’ education and argues that such advocacy is not simply about access to education but, more crucially, concerned with producing ideal Muslim woman-/girl-subjects with specific relationships to the patriarchal family, paid work, Islam, and the nation-state. The book received the 2019 Jackie Kirk Outstanding Book Award by the Comparative and International Education Society. Download and read for free here.
